(Brassica oleracea and B. napus) Annual or short-lived perennial in the Brassica Family. In 2011, we planted a Kale bed with a bunch of varieties in it, including Blue Scotch, Lacinato, our own “Famous” Kale/Collards cross, and the legendary Sutherlin. This is what came out of it: something Sweet, but Ugly. After the record low frost of 2013, this Kale was sweet like candy — amazingly delicious! But the plants themselves are homely, nothing special about their color or shape.
Cultivation & harvesting suggestions: Average garden soil sufficient. Full to part sun. Direct-sow late Spring to early Summer. The earlier you plant, the bigger they’ll be for winter, which is when you want them.
