(Helianthus Annuus) Annual in the Aster Family with giant yellow blooms. A favorite with pollinators, including different species of bees. 10-12’ tall. Edible seeds. Drought and heat tolerant once established. Sunflowers are originally native to North America, although many varieties we see today were cultivated on other continents. Native Americans crushed the seeds for flour, ate them as snacks, and used the plants for textiles, building material, and even medicine.
Planting suggestions: Tolerates different soil types. Full sun. Direct sow after final frost, or start transplants 3-4 weeks before planting out. Plant at a depth of ½ - 1 inch. Thin to 12-24” between plants in rows 24-36” apart.
