Lupine, Multicolor
(Lupinis _____) Lupine plants are native to the Western part of North America and beyond being stunningly beautiful, they provide a food source for hummingbirds, butterflies, and other insects. The variety on our property is multi-colored, with rich shades of pink, purple, and white. Different species of birds also benefit from eating the insects that lupine attracts. If living outside of lupine’s native range, you may want to keep these flowers in pots, as lupine can become invasive outside of its range.
Planting suggestions: Lupine prefers full sun and well-drained soil, although our plants have managed in a more clay-based soil as they are at the top of a hill in a spot where water does not collect as easily. Plant seeds at ⅛” depth and space out plants 12-14” apart. To help seeds germinate you can scratch the outer coating or soak the seeds before planting.
