Double Red Sweet Corn
(Zea mays) This corn is not only sweet and delicious when eaten fresh, it can also be dried and used for sweet cornmeal. The deep purple hue makes it a beautiful variety of corn to grow and the anthocyanins that give it its color can even stain your fingers purple. The plants themselves are around 5-7 feet tall and produce a couple of ears per plant. While this particular variety of corn has been naturally bred in recent decades, Native Americans built a relationship with this plant centuries ago and brought older varieties up to what is now the United States via the Mississippi River.
Planting suggestions: Plant seeds 1” deep and give each plant spacing of 12”. Sow seeds after the danger of frost has past, and to help with germination soak the seeds overnight before planting. If growing for seed make sure to plant at least 100 plants, as this helps maintain genetic diversity and prevent inbreeding. Your plants should be ready to eat around 80 to 100 days after planting, or you can wait to harvest until the plants turn brown and dry.
