Kale, Red Russian Cross
(Brassica napus) This is a Red Russian Kale cross, that we believe crossed with our Rutabagas. The crosses have less indented leaves compared to typical Red Russian and are slightly less sweet, but still tasty. They are incredibly hardy.
Our Red Russian cross survived the harsh winter ice storm in 2024, as well as survived aphids, flea beetles, and heat waves. These kales reseed themselves on our property without our help. Instead of going back to a “pure” Red Russian Kale, we have decided to share the crossed seeds with you all given their resilience. We suggest planting a number of kale plants and then selecting the ones that grow best for you all, as there will almost certainly be genetic variation between plants.
Planting suggestions: Sow seeds at a depth of ¼-½”. For baby kale make rows 2-6 feet apart and sow around 60 seeds per foot in a 2 ft band. For full size make rows 18-36” apart and plant a few seeds every foot. Thin to 1 plant per foot once the plants have a few of their true leaves.
